EL PASO, Texas—As part of National Chip Your Pet Month this May, El Paso Animal Services is calling on pet owners to microchip and update their pets’ information to help reunite more families and reduce shelter overcrowding.
More than 8,000 pets have entered El Paso Animal Services this year, many arriving without a microchip or with outdated contact information, delaying or preventing their return home.
“When we can’t reach an owner, that pet ends up staying in the shelter longer than necessary,” said Terry Kebschull, Director of El Paso Animal Services. “If more pets were microchipped and registered, we could reunite families faster and free up space for more animals in need.”
How to Update Your Pet’s Microchip:
1. Locate Your Pet’s Microchip Number: • Unsure of the number? Visit your veterinarian or any El Paso Fire Department station to have your pet scanned.
2. Find the Chip Manufacturer: • Go to www.PetMicrochipLookup.org and enter the chip number for manufacturer details.
3. Update Your Contact Information: • Log in to the manufacturer’s database and ensure your phone number, address, and email are correct.
4. Add Extra Protection: • Register your pet’s chip for free at www.my24pet.com and www.PetcoLove.org/lost.
Don’t Have a Microchip Yet?
Microchipping is quick, safe, and costs around $25 at most veterinary clinics. El Paso Animal Services also offers free microchip clinics through its Resource Rover program, which helps with implanting chips and updating information.
