EL PASO, Texas―As temperatures drop, El Paso Animal Services encourages pet owners to take extra precautions for their pets’ safety this season:
Provide a Shelter and Warmth:
Bring your pets indoors at nighttime, such as in a garage or laundry room. When outdoors, they must have access to drinkable water, be provided with proper shelter, featuring four walls, a roof and facing away from any drafts, and if they are tethered, they must have access to their shelter and water, adhering to the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act. The use of chain restraints is also prohibited.
Watch for Signs of Cold Stress:
Certain pets, like seniors, puppies, and those with shorter coats, are more vulnerable to the cold. Limit their outdoor time and consider pet sweaters or booties. If you notice shivering, anxiety, or lethargy, bring pets indoors and warm them gradually.
Beware of Antifreeze and Chemical Hazards:
Antifreeze and de-icing chemicals are hazardous if ingested. Keep pets away from driveways, garages, and areas where these chemicals may be present, as they can be tempting but are highly toxic to animals. If you suspect your pet has consumed antifreeze, promptly seek emergency treatment.
Tap Your Car Hood:
Community cats often seek warmth from the engine compartment, with many sleeping under car hoods. Mitigate the risk of accidents by tapping on the top of your hood or honking your horn before starting your vehicle.
Frostbite and Diet:
Paws, ears, and tails are frostbite-prone. After pets come inside, check these areas for redness, swelling, or sensitivity, using a towel to remove any moisture. Increase outdoor pets’ caloric intake especially for those who spend a lot of time outside and ensure they have access to unfrozen water.
Keep Wildlife Away:
Cold weather may bring wildlife, like coyotes, into neighborhoods in search of food. Remove pet food dishes after feeding to avoid attracting unwanted guests.
