We’re celebrating National Responsible Dog Owner Month this September, El Paso Animal Services is visited KTSM 9 News to shed light on the responsibilities that come with the of dog ownership.

  • Owning a dog involves thoughtful commitment. Before bringing a dog home, research your living situation’s rules, size and breed restrictions, and secure any necessary permissions.
  • Match your lifestyle with the right dog; consider seniors or adult dogs if you prefer a more laid-back lifestyle.
  • Make sure your dog is vaccinated your pet against diseases yearly prevents your dog from becoming sick from deadly diseases in this region.
  • Microchipping your dog is also important so that if they are ever lost or stolen, they can be easily traced back to you.
  • Your pets should also be spayed or neutered to prevent any unwanted litters from being born while also reducing health risks and behavioral issues for your dog.
  • Of course adopting from a shelter or rescue already ensures your new dog is fixed, microchipped, and up to date on their vaccines so that eliminates a lot of the financial burden from getting a new dog while also helping a homeless dog in need.
